How many ADA parking spaces does my lot need in Texas?
Under the Texas Accessibility Standards: 1 accessible space for lots of 1–25 total spaces, 2 for 26–50, 3 for 51–75, 4 for 76–100 — scaling up from there. At least 1 in every 6 accessible spaces must be van-accessible.
What are the size requirements for accessible parking spaces?
Standard accessible spaces are 8 feet wide with a 5-foot access aisle. Van-accessible spaces need an 8-foot access aisle (or an 11-foot space with 5-foot aisle). Two spaces may share one access aisle.
What color are ADA parking markings?
The International Symbol of Accessibility is typically painted in white on a blue background. Access aisles are marked with diagonal hatching. Texas also requires vertical signage — painted symbols alone are not sufficient.
Can I be sued if my parking lot isn’t ADA compliant?
Yes. ADA violations are enforced through federal civil lawsuits and complaints, and Texas sees frequent drive-by ADA litigation. Restriping to compliance is inexpensive relative to defense costs and remediation orders.
